Sonata 9 began life as a novella called Lost Along the Way. I created the plot sketch in 2007 and finished writing the bare bones in 2010. I submitted it to someone I thought was a developmental editor (the sort that gives advice) and found out later that day that she was a ‘publisher.’
Oh, the embarrassment.
I shelved the manuscript after that.
The project was special because it was my first ‘real prose.’ 2010’s horror novel, Gadarene, came from a comic script I wrote, and the brilliant CB Potts novelized it. Prose writing is different from scripting; both are valid forms, but one is meant for ‘readers,’ and writing for readers is where my skills needed work.
Then, a Polish client contacted me (I won’t call them a publisher because their business went kaput before they published anything.) I finished the novella in Polish, and they acquired it for a small advance. I commissioned C. Monaco to draw a cover and some back art for the book; this took place during our creative and personal split.
Zagubiony Po Drodze went to contract at the end of 2014, with a clause stipulated by me that the client publishes in print within ten years, or I get the rights back. I did this because the ‘bl’ and ‘gay fiction’ market aimed at manga readers began imploding, and some publishers in Europe and the States hadn’t handled things well with me; there were canceled contracts, returned advances, and outright ghosting. The Polish publisher disappeared, and I heard nothing for several years.
2020 rolled around, returning Zagubiony Po Drodze to my creative custody. I no longer possessed the English manuscript for Lost Along the Way, so I translated every chapter back to English and cleaned up the prose. Retitled, Sonata 9, my second draft revisions got posted at Tapas for free. I got plenty of readers but zero interaction or feedback. Sigh. I finished it, though, since it amassed more readers than my sapphic sci-fi series, Femitokon.
Sonata 9 is finished without an extensive rewrite.
It’s still the freshman effort written in 2007, and I hope you enjoy it.
Thank you for reading.
